Somehow, I'm thinking my Mom might have allowed me to attend if we did have it. I think folk dance would have fallen into a different cagetory than typical, American-style "sinful" dance.

To be honest, the beach at Brighton Beach was a bit dirty. The beaches were free in Brooklyn so there was no real budget for cleanup. I lived in a small apartment just blocks from the beach - 4th floor walk-up. I...It must have been fun to live in Brighton Beach. I would love to smell salt water all the time... but then again, it is Brooklyn, not the Caribbean. I'd take it.
Did you have to get a note from Pastor Johnson excusing you from folk dance in PE or did you engage in that evil? I finally figured out that my mom had no way of knowing that's what we were doing unless I told her. Of course there were scowls from someone in my class from church and the good 59th Street girls. I would go home and worry that Jesus would come because I did a folk dance with other girls... now that's so laughable but at the time, I feared hell and damnation (funny, I did it anyway though)Joyce Ligharihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13853208533065317514noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-876740550069534239.post-90719494414870499922011-05-14T12:43:38.275-05:002011-05-14T12:43:38.275-05:00LOL! But I don't recall hearing why dancing was OK in the Psalms...?

And hey... another connection between you and me: My very first apartment was at Brighton Beach, Brooklyn. My maiden name was Sivertsen. The local banks always mistook it for 'Silverstein.' Yes, a very Jewish neighborhood. What was a 'good little Norwegian girl'like me doing there?
